THE DESIGN
Mersea sits on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people, in the historic old survey of Port Willunga. This family home and retreat echoes the aesthetic of the surrounding southern coastal landscapes. The design celebrates natural and raw materials, showcasing the beauty of pure and considered architectural form and detailing.
Central to the design is a focus on temporal lighting qualities and weathering materials. A large-format timber screen door and operable external window screens give the project a strong visual identity. These screens allow the building to transform from an enclosed, solid object into an open and light-filled set of spaces, enabling you to engage with the environment and seasonal changes. This thoughtful design helps you to slow down and enjoy the unique qualities of living near the coast.
HOUSE FEATURES
The house comfortably accommodates six guests, offering an efficiently planned space that balances privacy with living areas.
The layout includes a separated bedroom wing with a private bathroom, ensuite, laundry, plus an adjoining multipurpose entertainment space. Boasting a soft lawn, trampoline, BBQ, and outdoor shower, Mersea is ideally designed with entertainment in mind.
Through careful planning and selection of native trees and plants indigenous to the Fleurieu Peninsula, the landscaping seamlessly integrates with the architectural design. This creates an environment that mirrors the natural beauty of the rugged coastal landscape and enhances the experience of living in this serene retreat.

- The house was constructed of milled native timbers and locally sourced materials to lower its carbon footprint.
- Rainwater harvesting is utilised for all toilets, appliances and garden.
- Integrated recycling bins and green waste systems.
